Spring is almost here, but your skin is still feeling the side effects of cold, dry air. It’s time to break out face masks and give your skin some much-needed pampering. We put together four diy recipes that will get your skin in shape before the tulips start to bloom!
Mask #1: Heal dry skin
Dry skin = flakes. It’s definitely not a good look and many moisturizers alone don’t do the trick. This homemade face mask will give you a nourishing , hydrating boost that your skin craves this time of year.
What you’ll need:
- 1 tablespoon of honey
- 1/2 Avocado
- 1 small handful of oats or oat bran
How it works:
Massage the mixture right onto your face or any patches of dry skin. Leave it on for 15 minutes and then rinse the mixture off with warm water.
It sounds like an Instagram-worthy breakfast, but don’t eat it quite yet! The honey helps your skin retain moisture without feeling oily. The oats help soothe and calm your irritated skin. The avocado banishes the roughness, leaving you with silky smooth skin.
Mask #2: Detox, purify and cleanse
If you want to give your face the ultimate detox treatment, try this diy recipe! Bentonite clay draws out toxins and impurities to help reveal soft, clear skin.
What you’ll need:
- 1 tablespoon Bentonite clay
- 1-2 tablespoons grapefruit juice
- 1 tsp honey
How it works:
Leave the mixture on for 10-15 minutes or until the clay mask starts to feel dry around the edges, then rinse with warm water. Follow with a serum or moisturizer to lock in moisture. If you have very sensitive skin, consider swapping the clay for greek yogurt.
**NOTE** Do not use a metal bowl or spoon with Bentonite clay. Mix all the ingredients together in a non-metal bowl then apply to a clean face.
Mask #3: Reduce the look of pores
There really is no way to “close” your pores, but you can reduce the appearance of your pores and make them less visible. All you need is three ingredients and those pores don’t stand a chance.
What you’ll need:
- 1 tablespoon of honey
- 1 egg white
- A little squeeze of lemon juice
How it works:
Massage onto your skin and let it sit for about 10 minutes. Rinse with a warm, gentle washcloth and pat dry.
Both the egg white and lemon juice have astringent properties that tighten skin and make enlarged pores less obvious. It’s the perfect pre-foundation ritual, but be sure to avoid getting any in your mouth. It’s not that tasty. The honey is important, as it’ll boost your skin’s moisture and provide suppleness and take away that taught feeling.
Mask #4: Keep skin smooth
Coffee is good for the soul and for your face. This mask helps bring a little life back into your skin after a long winter. It’s great for all skin types!
What you’ll need:
- ½ cup of ground organic coffee beans
- ½ cup of unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 cup of unsweetened whole milk
- 1 tablespoon of lemon juice
- 1 tablespoon of honey
How it works:
In a bowl, mixing the coffee beans and cocoa powder. Add in the milk, and stir until you create a thick paste. Add the lemon juice and honey, and apply to your clean face. Allow the mask to sit for about 20 minutes, and then rinse off with a warm cloth.
Coffee really helps reduce redness and inflammation. The cocoa powder is a powerful source of antioxidants and can repair the damage caused by pollutants. Combined with the milk and honey, this face mask exfoliates and brings nutrients to your skin that help tighten and brighten your complexion.
